East Bayfront: The Waterfront Innovation District

A Message from John Campbell, President and CEO of Waterfront Toronto:

"The next step in the development of the East Bayfront precinct is to create a Waterfront Innovation Centre."

A key part of our vision has been to make Toronto’s waterfront synonymous with innovation – from high-performance green buildings to smart infrastructure – we are building communities that are leading edge and future ready. Toronto is already home to the third-largest information communications technology sector in North America. The Economist Intelligence Unit recently named our city the fourth most liveable in the world. Earlier this year the Intelligent Community Forum, a New York-based think tank, selected the city as one of the Top 7 Most Intelligent Communities in the World. These achievements do not come in isolation – Toronto’s most passionate city builders and urban leaders have helped our city seize the right opportunities and position ourselves for global competitiveness in business and technology.

In East Bayfront, we have focused on building a community that is designed to spark innovation and fuel economic growth, while meeting some of the most aggressive environmental sustainability targets. We are building an innovation district that is home to leading companies in the information communication technology sector. Leveraging anchor institutions like George Brown College and companies like Corus Entertainment, this vision is becoming a reality. We are building one of Canada’s first open-access, ultra-high-speed broadband community networks and we are making it accessible to all. Equipped with advanced fibre-optic technology, the network will help make East Bayfront a vital component of a “living lab” for advanced technology as we develop new ways to work and play at the water’s edge.

The next step in the development of the East Bayfront precinct is to create the Waterfront Innovation Centre. Working with a visionary development partner – someone who shares our desire to be a global leader in sustainability and design excellence – we will create an anchor development that will be home to the companies and institutions that are putting Toronto and Canada at the forefront of creating tomorrow’s technology today.

A smarter, more innovative, more future-ready Toronto will be more competitive on the global stage, more liveable and more sustainable. Read on to learn more about this once-in-a-generation development opportunity and the vision that is coalescing around this project.
